Summer heat

It’s hot and full summer now in Fukuoka, Japan. Cicadas are singing noisily in the trees, and the air is very humid. Here are some photographs of the outside of the two hives I have on the roof of a 6 story building (Agriculture Building #1) at the Hakozaki Campus of Kyushu University. The bee population seems to be particularly high in the log hive, so many of the bees are on the outside of the hive. The bees in the top bar hive are bringing in pollen and building comb, so they seem to be doing well too. Of course, these are native Japanese honey bees, Apis cerana japonica.
