An active beehive

Both of these hives I inherited from my father last year when he moved to Japan. The one on the left is going gangbusters, while the one on the right is not doing as well. Last year, the opposite was true. The one on the right may have suffered from my having left on the queen excluder over the winter. It’s possible that led to the death of some of my bees, from starvation.
